The new terminal area at Frankfurt Airport

Frankfurt terminal ready for A380

Lufthansa has revamped the passenger concourses in Terminals 1 and 2 at Frankfurt Airport in preparation for the airlines first A380 flights this summer.

The new pier linking the C and D concourses allows passengers to board flights on two levels from the terminal. The dual-level gate -- the first of its kind -- will allow First, Business and Economy-Class passengers into separate areas as soon as they access the waiting and boarding zone at the airport.

Once through the security controls, First and Business-Class passengers go straight to the priority gates on Departures Level Three. These gates, in the Lufthansa business-lounge style, offer easy chairs, workstations with wireless Internet access and bistros. First-Class passengers as well as HON Circle members or Senators also have the use of an exclusive Senator Lounge with views of the airport apron, and the take-off and landing strips.

Oneworld expands network

Alliance oneworld has announced five new destinations over the coming weeks to its network. British Airways flies to Antalya, Turkey from London Gatwick three times a week from 10 April; and to Poznan, Poland from London Gatwick daily from 30 March.

Hungarian Airlines inaugurates flights to Cluj-Napoca, the gateway to Transylvania, from Budapest twice-daily from 30 March.

American Eagle will connect with Grand Junction from its Dallas/Fort Worth hub from 7 April with twice-daily and Tampico Mexico from Dallas/Fort Worth daily from 7 April.

Expansion plans at Bratislava (AP)

Slovakia announced plans Tuesday to expand and modernize the Bratislava international airport, doubling its capacity by 2012.

The state-run joint-stock company intends to invest 4.9 billion koruna (euro151 million; US$238 million) into the project, including the two-stage construction of a new terminal and general modernization of the airport.

In 2012, the airport's annual capacity should increase to 5 million passengers, the statement said. Over 2 million passengers used the airport in 2007.

Last year, the Slovak government under Premier Robert Fico banned the airport's sale to an international consortium led by owners of the Vienna airport, saying the deal would eliminate competition in the region.

Rising airline ticket prices (AP)

Air Canada announced today that it's raising some of its fares.

Company spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick couldn't provide details as to which markets or routes would be hardest hit by the hikes, but says Air Canada is still competitive.

It's certainly not the only airline to raise prices.

Last week, Continental and United both announced fair hikes, and today Northwest said it would match them.

The increases were prompted by soaring oil prices which have pushed up the cost of jet fuel. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
