(CNN) -- Tropical Storm Hernan turned into the fifth hurricane of the eastern North Pacific hurricane season Friday as its winds neared 75 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.

A satellite image from noon ET Friday shows Hurricane Hernan over the Pacific Ocean.
Hurricane Hernan's center was 865 miles southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California, the center said in its 11 a.m. ET advisory.
The hurricane is projected to remain over open water, heading west at around 13 mph, with its speed gradually decreasing.
Hurricane-force winds extended about 25 miles from Hernan's center. Some strengthening is expected over the next day or so.
The eastern North Pacific hurricane season officially begins May 15, generally peaks in late August or early September and ends in late November.
